Amara's Story
Amara opened her eyes and waited for them to adjust to the soft light. The first thought to enter her groggy mind was the realization that she was, for the first time in many days, actually comfortable. Amara tilted her head slightly forward, finally understanding the cause of this unexpected relief. She was lying on a cushion, covered with a blanket, in a small cabin. But before she could think any further, she was overcome with an excruciating headache that only worsened when she tried to sit up. They were even more surprised to see that it was a young woman, perhaps only a few years older than any of them, covered in cuts and bruises. In addition to being slightly torn, her clothes were smeared with blood and some other peculiar black substance. The Fallen Ones
Killian and his soldiers had managed to return, unscathed, to the impenetrable fortress on the summit of the great plateau. A fierce wind, the only other entity in existence on the plane, blew the coarse dust in his face – the consequence of living in a place more arid than any imaginable desert and blacker than any onyx stone. The sun had not graced this evil place with her presence for centuries, leaving the land barren and completely lifeless. Whether all life merely faded into extinction once the daystar had abandoned it or if things had always been this way since creation, Killian wasn't certain. But

Tessa slammed the book shut. She sprang out of armchair where she had been quietly reading for the last hour. It was almost noon and she suddenly remembered that she had promised her mother that she'd do the week's grocery shopping. Tessa tossed the book onto the chair's seat cushion and hastily began to put on her soft leather shoes. She knew her cousin would be coming to pick her up soon, but her mother and father were at work; the markets would be closed before they got home.
"If I hurry now, I can make it back before Skye gets here," she thought hopefully.
